It was on April 15, 1997 that Major League Baseball retired the number 42 in honor of Jackie Robinson of the Brooklyn Dodgers. Not just his Dodgers number, but across the entire league. It was the first number retirement of its kind. No Major League player would wear #42 again — except on April 15 when all MLB players wear 42.
This annual celebration throughout the league has become a tradition we all a look forward to. It is truly an emotional, prideful and inspirational sight to see everyone taking the field wearing #42 on that day — “Jackie Robinson Day”.
